Culture

'Shafana and Aunt Sarrinah' revolves around culture. Both the characters have different understandings of culture. Shafana urges the reader to have no shame in converting to religion and be open about it, whereas Sarrinah is reserved, hoping not to expose her cultural beliefs because of her fears surrounding 911 and other events that have occurred within the Muslim community. She is aware of others perceiving her culture as a whole, negatively, making her remain quiet.

Shafana: But your faith touches every part of your life.

Sarrinah: No. My faith is private and cultural. But it is not the answer to all the freedoms we have struggled for.

Shafana believes other communities are open to change and diverse communities. She strongly stands by her beliefs.

Shafana: Diversity is...

Sarrinah: Tolerated.

Shafana: Welcomed. Celebrated.
